Skip to main contentWhen we asked you to help us Paint Penobscot County Purple in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we were thrilled with the response we received! Purple ribbons started popping up on everyone’s lapels, we sold purple lightbulbs to tons of individuals who wanted their homes to glow in support of survivors, and folks from all over the county were calling us to find out how they could get involved.
The following list recognizes just some of the great supporters we have out there in our community. If you participated and don’t see your name here, contact us and let us know–we’d love to hear from you!

Have you heard about our library campaign? It’s one of our favorite Domestic Violence Awareness Month initiatives. This year libraries throughout the county put together some great displays with the donated books. We’ve included pictures of a couple of the displays below–and remember, though the displays will go away at the end of October, the books remain for you to check out! For a list of all of the books Spruce Run has donated to Penobscot County libraries, see our suggested reading list.

We hope you will join Bangor’s Empire Beauty School Saturday, October 24 from 9:00 to 4:00 for their Day of Beauty. The proceeds from the day benefit Spruce Run.
This Saturday is actually Empire Education Group’s National Day of Beauty; schools across the country will be participating and donating to their local domestic violence organizations. Empire schools participate in Cut It Out, a program that teaches salon professionals how to recognize and safely respond to clients who show signs of abuse. For more information on the national initiative, visit the Empire Gives Back website. To support Spruce Run and the great folks at Empire Beauty School, stop by on Saturday between 9:00 and 4:00!
At Spruce Run, we get to see the generosity of this community firsthand, every day.
A recent example: Congregation Beth El delivered a huge vanload of non-perishable food to our Resource Center! The conference room was full of grocery bags containing canned soups, veggies, and fruit; pasta and rice; cereal; baby food; and all sorts of other basic essentials. This food will go to families staying in our shelter or living in our transitional housing, or to other families we work with who need some help putting food on the table.
We want to extend a big thanks to Congregation Beth El for your commitment to the people we serve. You remind us what a great community this is. Thank you.
Here’s some information to consider:
We know that government spending is often related to the cost of services for Maine residents. According to the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, TABOR II would result in cuts to education, health care, emergency services, public safety, courts and correctional facilities. All of these important services contribute to the ability for victims of domestic violence to seek support and safety from abuse. In Colorado, the only state to pass TABOR, severe cuts were made to programs that serve victims of domestic violence after TABOR went into effect. If TABOR II passes, the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence believes that the legislature will be forced to make cuts to similar programs here in Maine.
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Spruce Run has a new facebook page! Search “Spruce Run” and look for our logo. Click on the page to become a fan, and then tell your friends–We want to get 200 fans by the end of October! It’s a lofty goal, but with your help, we can make it happen!
Check out our wish list! There are many opportunities to help out, both large and small.
Here at Spruce Run we see the generosity of our community every day, whether it is in the little girl who drops by to donate storybooks to the children at shelter, or in the community organization who donates operating support for our children’s services.
To all of you, we say thank you. Your support keeps this work going.
