We’ve provided quite a bit of information and could really use the creativity of you and your students to help spread the word!
Spruce Run’s Love Mashup Movie Maker Contest Poster– Encourage your students to become a part of raising awareness by creating a Love Mashup- the new online application from loveisrespect.org. This program is sponsored by the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline. This application allows them to use preset graphics, words, sounds, and more to create a 30 second Love Mashup Movie to share with friends. We are asking that students create a Love Movie Mashup and send it to us by February 26th. The contest winners will have their Movie Mashups featured on our website and will win a cool prize. Prizes include an Ipod shuffle and gift certificates to Chili’s, Tim Hortons and Oriental Jade.. If you are interested, check it out …
Have an Outreach Table staffed by Spruce Run– Each year, during Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week, we set up tables in cafeterias during lunch to provide information and resources to students. If you are interested in having a Spruce Run staff a table please contact us. Student groups could also staff a table- We’ve had student groups like JMG, Peer Mediators, and Civil Rights Teams set up a table and staff it themselves. Either way, it’s a great opportunity to raise awareness!
Wear purple days - Purple is the color for domestic and dating abuse awareness. By wearing purple students can show their peers that they believe dating abuse is a problem and that together we can create change.
Lollipops – Many students associate Spruce Run with Tootsie Pop lollipops as we distribute them during all of our school presentations. If you would like to distribute information in a fun and yummy way, go ahead and purchase some lollipops. Print the informational tags that we attach to each lollipop and attach them yourselves.
Display Library Campaign books along with new materials about teen dating violence – Each year Spruce Run donates books to your school’s library for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Your librarian’s have already been sent information and materials to set up a display for this month. Please check it out and remind your students of this wonderful resource. Want to know what books we’ve donated ?
We hope you will be able to participate in this national event. It’s great opportunity for schools and students across the nation to raise awareness of this important issue. If you are going to participate, please send an email letting us know what you’ll be doing so we can keep track of all the wonderful things happening here in Penobscot County. We would love to see pictures if they are available! If you would like more information about this event or any of the opportunities presented here please contact us.

January is a month for snuggling down tight. That’s why we are asking for new bedding this month!
Help the families we work with stay warm and cozy during these long, cold winter nights. We can use new twin, double, and queen sized sheets and blankets, and new pillows. In addition, we have a family in transitional housing that needs two twin beds for the kids. If you have a mattress set in good condition that you’d like to donate, please call Bev at 945.5102.
Many thanks for your generosity. To see the complete Wish List, click here.

Spruce Run’s Annual Meeting will take place January 21 from 5:30-7:30 pm. We hope you will join us as we honor two longtime friends of the organization, Hermon High School teacher Shelley Gavett and volunteer Peggy Day. We will also hear from keynote speaker Representative Sara Stevens, who will be sharing her thoughts on the work we do.
Shelley Gavett is receiving our Partners and Change Award, which honors an outstanding community partner who recognizes that every person’s safety exists in the cultural context that we all create every day in our own lives with our words, actions, and choices regarding what we tolerate, what we challenge, and to whom we reach out. For many years Shelley has carried out these ideals in her teaching and her work with youth around promoting safe and healthy relationships.
Peggy Day is receiving the Michele Alexander Award, which honors a Spruce Run volunteer who exemplifies the qualities of the award’s namesake, a Spruce Run volunteer who died in a car accident in 2003. Peggy, who has served on our Steering Committee and on the hotline, shows the same grounded, compassionate support for people impacted by abuse that Michele did. Peggy’s generous spirit and her boundless energy have contributed much to this organization over the years.
Please join us as we honor these two people who have worked so hard on behalf of people impacted by abuse in our community. Snacks and cash bar available. Admission is $10; donations are gratefully accepted. Please RSVP by Jan. 12th to Bev at 945-5102 or bwilson@sprucerun.net.
