Teen Dating Violence Awareness
Governor Baldacci has proclaimed February 1st through 6th , 2010 – Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week. In addition, Congress has declared February National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. We are asking schools around the county to participate in a multitude of activities throughout the week and month.

We’ve provided quite a bit of information and could really use the creativity of you and your students to help spread the word!
Spruce Run’s Love Mashup Movie Maker Contest Poster– Encourage your students to become a part of raising awareness by creating a Love Mashup- the new online application from loveisrespect.org. This program is sponsored by the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline. This application allows them to use preset graphics, words, sounds, and more to create a 30 second Love Mashup Movie to share with friends. We are asking that students create a Love Movie Mashup and send it to us by February 26th. The contest winners will have their Movie Mashups featured on our website and will win a cool prize. Prizes include an Ipod shuffle and gift certificates to Chili’s, Tim Hortons and Oriental Jade.. If you are interested, check it out …
Have an Outreach Table staffed by Spruce Run– Each year, during Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week, we set up tables in cafeterias during lunch to provide information and resources to students. If you are interested in having a Spruce Run staff a table please contact us. Student groups could also staff a table- We’ve had student groups like JMG, Peer Mediators, and Civil Rights Teams set up a table and staff it themselves. Either way, it’s a great opportunity to raise awareness!
Wear purple days - Purple is the color for domestic and dating abuse awareness. By wearing purple students can show their peers that they believe dating abuse is a problem and that together we can create change.
Lollipops – Many students associate Spruce Run with Tootsie Pop lollipops as we distribute them during all of our school presentations. If you would like to distribute information in a fun and yummy way, go ahead and purchase some lollipops. Print the informational tags that we attach to each lollipop and attach them yourselves.
Display Library Campaign books along with new materials about teen dating violence – Each year Spruce Run donates books to your school’s library for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Your librarian’s have already been sent information and materials to set up a display for this month. Please check it out and remind your students of this wonderful resource. We hope you will be able to participate in this national event. It’s great opportunity for schools and students across the nation to raise awareness of this important issue. If you are going to participate, please send an email letting us know what you’ll be doing so we can keep track of all the wonderful things happening here in Penobscot County.
