Archive for March, 2010

Thanks to Our Community

Here at Spruce Run, we have a lot to be thankful for this month. A couple we’d like to highlight:

For the second year in a row, students from Unity College donated their Spring Break to do a service project for Spruce Run. This year they cleaned the shelter, did general repair work, constructed a structure in the back yard for residents who smoke, organized donations and supplies–and that’s just some of it! Thanks to the Unity folks for coming and doing so much helpful work!

Another generous contribution was made by the family of the late Sharon Jackiw. Sharon, a longtime friend of Spruce Run’s and a former Steering Committee member, passed away in November of 2009. Recently, her family generously donated many of her household items and furniture to Spruce Run. They will be given to families who use Spruce Run’s services and are in need. We are so grateful to Sharon for all that she did on behalf of battered women, and to her family for this gift.

Annual Silent Auction and Dessert Party a Success!

March 20th found Spruce Run at UMaine’s Buchanan Alumni House. Along with many people from the community, we ate delicious desserts and snacks, browsed through two full rooms of auction items, and tapped our toes to the music of the Spontaneous Jazz Ensemble.  Thanks to everyone who turned out and made this fundraiser a success. It was wonderful to see you all!

Also, a special thanks to our event sponsors, whose support helped make the night happen: Bangor Metro, Bangor Savings Bank, Consumer Title, Hannaford Supermarkets, The Maine Edge, Northeast Cardiology, and Northeast Reprographics.

Community Members Hold Vigil in Memory of Damien Lynn

There will be a candlelight vigil in honor of Damien Lynn on Tuesday, March 9 at 7:00 pm at Cascade Park in Bangor. The event is being organized by community members Leslie Collagen and Marissa Ouelette, and they encourage anyone who wants to be involved to contact them. Collagan’s number is 949-5832, and  Ouellette’s is 843-0550.

Spruce Run will be attending and we are helping to get the word out about this important event. We hope to see you there, too, as we remember Damien and stand together against abuse.

Need of the Month for March: Gift Cards!

March is gift card month at Spruce Run.

A gas card can help someone get to safety. A card to Wal-Mart or Target can help a family start over. Please consider donating a gift card for a department store, grocery store, or gas station this month.  Phone cards and BAT tickets are also needed. Your small gift can make a huge difference in someone’s life.  Many thanks for your generosity.

The Silent Auction and Dessert Party Approaches!
