LINCOLN WALKS TO END ABUSE FLYER – PLEASE DISTRIBUTE
Spruce Run will be hosting the “Lincoln Walks to End Abuse” event on October 12thas part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Join the Lincoln Police Chief, William Lawrence; Director of Lincoln Parks and Recreation, Ron Weatherbee; Penobscot Valley Hospital, Health Access Network and other members of the community as we walk a loop around town to raise awareness about domestic abuse. We are inviting and encouraging all members of the greater Lincoln community to participate in this important event. As a community, we must stand together to show that we are a source of support for victims and that we will not tolerate abuse. We are encouraging everyone to wear purple shirts, company shirts, bring signs/banners, etc. and help us make this an exciting walk to raise awareness about Domestic Violence.
Here is what to expect:
Spruce Run staff will be displaying the Clothesline Project in the at Health Access Network and the Gazebo . Our Clothesline Project is made up of shirts created by local survivors and their family and friends. It is displayed each year during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. With its vibrant yellows, oranges and reds, our Clothesline Project reflects the prevalence of domestic violence and sexual assault, and vividly details the impact for the victims and their loved ones.
We will have a Spruce Run table displays to share important information about Spruce Run Services. We will be handing out free purple ribbons, purple ribbon temporary tattoos, purple balloons and more. Tables will feature the latest donation of books from our Knowledge Empowers Campaign.
Spruce Run will also be facilitating the Hands Are Not For Hurting Activity, which focuses on engaging young children in becoming a part of a healthy community. Children are asked to trace their hands on a banner and pledge that they will not use their hands to hurt others. The banner will then be carried during the walk and used for future awareness events.
At 5:00 pm walkers (carrying purple balloons, wearing purple ribbons, etc.) will make their way down Main Street, across Adams Street and return to the Gazebo via Fleming Street (~0.7 miles).
Upon return to the Gazebo, candles will be passed out and a short remembrance ceremony to honor those who have lost their lives due to domestic violence will be held. There will speakers from Spruce Run and the Lincoln community. The speakers will be focusing on affirming their commitment to ending abuse in our community. There will be light refreshments served afterwards.
